You may be under the illusion that there’s no feeling quite like unfurling wrapping paper from a brand spanking new handbag on Christmas Day.
And you’re nearly right. There is (almost) nothing quite like it.
But then may I propose that you try unfurling wrapping paper from a brand spanking new handbag marked with your own initials, and then you will know what love at first sight really is.
Nothing screams ‘I have put so much thought into this gift!’ quite like a personal monogramming of the beneficiary’s initials. And in the year during which the handbag has been rendered all but redundant, if you feel it’s more appropriate for your loved one, then opt to stamp their initials on jewellery, address tags, or poplin cotton shirts instead.
Monogramming is a way of sprinkling a dash of magic fairy dust over somebody’s gift, one which so long as they hold onto their name, they will treasure for the rest of their lives.
Bespoke monogramming is big business. In 2008, as the world grappled with a recession, Louis Vuitton experienced double-digit growth, with its Monogram line “enjoying exceptional momentum.” According to research from Deloitte, one in three people are interested in personalised products, with 71 per cent of those prepared to pay a premium for such embellishments. In other words, you can’t really go wrong.
If you’ve tired of poring over pages and pages of gift ideas only to still feel none the wiser as to what to bequeath your loved ones, then say it with personalisation. These are the brands leading the charge.
With Nothing Underneath
© Provided by Evening Standard With Nothing UnderneathMeghan Markle-approved With Nothing Underneath (revered for its arsenal of insouciant oversized shirts) debuted its bespoke monogramming service which is in collaboration with Royal warrant-approved embroiderer, Hand & Lock, earlier this year. The embroidery house, which was founded in 1767, will stitch up to four initials on either the front panel of your chosen shirt or on either one of its cuffs. Then there’s the simple choice of two fonts and whichever colour you’d like to bring those initials to life. All that’s left to do is pop a bow on it and get it under the tree!
Stand-out piece: The Poplin shirt in Steel Blue makes a strong case for another cult blue shirt that you didn't know you needed.
The cost of monogramming is £36 for two initials, £40 for three and £45 for four. withnothingunderneath.com
